Professional Development Program in University Teaching (PD-PUT)
Learning and Teaching Centre, University of Victoria
To compete successfully in today’s academic job market, it is essential that graduate students demonstrate their ability and commitment to teach with confidence and competence. The Professional Development Program in University Teaching (PD-PUT) focuses precisely on developing the pedagogical knowledge and practical skills required to teach in higher education, and it is also designed so that upon completion participants leave with a substantial, up-to-date Teaching Dossier.
PD-PUT typically takes one to two years and can easily be completed in tandem with the participant’s own graduate program. Upon completion, participants are awarded a Certificate acknowledging their completion of PD-PUT requirements and knowledge about, and experience in, teaching in higher education. The Coordinator and the Faculty Advisor of the PD-PUT track each participant’s progress to ensure that all of the requirements are met at the appropriate standard within the determined time frame. PD-PUT is administered and coordinated by the Learning and Teaching Centre at the University of Victoria.
Goals of the Program:
The Program is specifically geared to:
- Develop and improve teaching skills
- Provide professional development for graduate students
- Provide a safe environment for experimentation and reflective practice
- Foster a collegial community at UVic
- Provide preparation for the academic job market
