The TA/Graduate Student Professional Development Program offers a range of training and professional development options for new and experienced TAs and graduate students seeking future faculty positions. Listed below are the selection of workshops available, divided into TA Training, TA ProD, and Critical Incidents workshop series. All workshops are available to all graduate students on campus to help them prepare for their role as future faculty, or to provide valuable transferable skills.
The TA Training workshops are geared to new TAs and graduate students who are just beginning to teach at university. Essentials of teaching and learning are covered so that students can begin to develop their approach to teaching. Topics will include learning and teaching styles, who our students are today, how to manage Moodle and technology in the classroom – to name just a few.
The TA ProD workshops are for advanced/experienced TAs and graduate students and seek to provoke questions and discussion about current issues in teaching and learning in higher education today.
The Critical Incidents workshop series starts with a small film clip then leads to discussion. A critical incident may be thought of as a highly compressed case study that poses a problem but offers no preferred solution. In this series, dramatized video vignettes depict a wide variety of challenges associated with teaching and learning in higher education. Each scene lasts three to four minutes and discussion questions follow each episode.
All workshops and programs are available at no cost but we appreciate prior registration so that we have enough supplies and refreshments for those attending.
Although some events are specifically aimed at the interests of TAs, they are not intended to exclude others from joining, or to suggest that other events run by the Learning and Teaching Centre (LTC) would not be suitable for TAs. Everyone is welcome!

Monday, November 5, 2012
1:30 PM ~ 3:00 PM, HHB 128
Facilitator: Peter Bell, Economics
Public speaking is part of teaching. A good teacher carefully balances the pace and type of information offered to keep students engaged with their learning. It is possible for a teacher to improve his or her speaking skills, specifically the use of his or her body and voice. To foster this development, the workshop leads teachers through exercises where they practice delivering a monologue in comparison to an expert. In one case, the monologue is humorous and the expert is famous comedian, George Carlin. In the other case, the monologue is technical and the expert is central banker, Ben Bernanke. By using these two monologues, participants will refine their use of voice and body when presenting different types of information.

Wednesday, January 23, 2013
1:00 PM ~ 2:30 PM, HHB128

Classroom management can be a tricky part of teaching. Situations can arise that hinder student learning; for example, a small group of students can end up dominating class discussions, some students may appear to always be inattentive or come to class unprepared, and other students may seem to frequently make excuses for missed or late assignments. Navigating these situations with tact and subtlety can be a challenge, but oftentimes these issues must be addressed so as to optimize learning opportunities for all students in the class.
