Carnegie CASTL Project

In 2006 UVic was delighted to be selected by the Carnegie Foundation’s Carnegie Academy for the Scholarship of Teaching and Learning (CASTL) international Institutional Leadership Program. Our project is entitled “Assessing the Scholarship of Teaching and Learning in the Disciplines at UVic” and has been particularly chosen to contribute to knowledge building in the CASTL category of “Policy, Assessment and Accountability.” We are joined in this scholarship group by six other partner institutions—all well-known for their leadership in the scholarship of teaching and learning—with whom we are pleased to collaborate. These international partners range across four countries and three continents.

The specific goals of the UVic contributions to the group are to:

  • Identify and document the many different ways that the Scholarship of Teaching and Learning (SoTL) is defined, assessed and valued across a wide variety of disciplines
  • Document best practices in the documentation of the scholarship of teaching and learning (within existing assessment policies at UVic and elsewhere)
  • Make recommendations as to how the assessment of the scholarship of teaching and learning (and therefore the reward for the activity) can be made more explicit in evaluation policies
  • Advocate for the recognition of this kind of scholarship on a par with other kinds of scholarly work undertaken by faculty.
  • Contribute to the dialogue around SoTL in the Canadian context (and beyond)

As the project progresses project updates will be provided and we hope to share experiences from participating faculties and departments.

This project was completed in 2009. For more information please contact:
