The Curriculum Design Institute (CDI) at UVic is closely modeled on the work of McGill teaching support personnel documented in Saroyan and Amundsen (2004). The workshop engages participants in the process of aligning learning outcomes, learning strategies and learning assessment in their courses. It is expected that participants will finish the workshop with an understanding of how to apply the process to their course and be able to describe and demonstrate the process to others. The key features of the workshop are peer discussion and critique, time for systematic reflection and the identification of basic assumptions regarding course design and student learning.

CONCEPT MAPPING
This initial activity helps participants to sort, define, and organize the major themes and concepts to be included in their course. The concept map provides them with a blueprint for their redesign activities to follow. Participants also gain an understanding of how to use concept maps in their course to support student learning.

LEARNING OUTCOMES
In the second step of the process, participants develop clear and specific learning outcomes that are consistent with the subject matter of the course and the preparedness of the students. Learning outcomes are defined as the knowledge, intellectual skills, and dispositions that instructors expect that students will gain in their redesigned course. To enable participants to write these outcomes, there are discussions to clarify the processes associated with learning. Learning outcomes help students understand what is expected in the course and can establish the relevance of a course to their particular program of study.

LEARNING STRATEGIES
Based on the learning outcomes that have been identified for their course, participants begin the process of choosing specific teaching methodologies that will enable their students to attain the learning outcomes that have been stated. Participants are also introduced to various instructional technologies that could be of use to enable their students to learn.

LEARNING ASSESSMENT I
Assessing student learning is one of the most complex tasks in course design. In this step of the redesign process, participants are introduced to different models of assessment and to the concept of alignment between learning outcomes and assessment strategies. Participants start to develop an assessment strategy for their course.

LEARNING ASSESSMENT II
In the final step of the process, participants complete an assessment plan and bring all the sections of the redesigned course together for presentation to the CRW group. They also consider ways to assess their own teaching and the learning of students using low stakes assessment techniques.

The Curriculum Design Institute (CDI) provides a collegial environment and extensive support for instructors to design a new course or to redesign a current course in order to enhance student learning and student engagement. CDI provides a focused approach to course/curriculum development, including identification of: 1) key course concepts; 2) learning goals/outcomes; 3) instructional strategies; and 4) appropriate assessment methods to support course goals. Additionally, the CDI introduces participants to a range of campus-wide expertise and resources that will be available to participants during and after the workshop session. As the University welcomes students with a range of learning disabilities and from a diversity of cultural backgrounds, we need to align our teaching practices with the needs of all students. We seek to promote values and competencies for inclusion, world-mindedness, global citizenship and Indigenous ways of knowing across all academic disciplines. Previous participants in this workshop have described it as a "transformative experience" and have expressed a renewed sense of enthusiasm for teaching.

Please Note: This institute is 5 days long, and attendance on all days is expected. CDI is available at no charge to all UVic instructors who are accepted into the program. Learning in university courses and the 21st century technology tools [Curriculum Design Institute (CDI) Follow-up Lens]
Friday, November 18, 2011, 4:00 PM ~ 7:00 PM, HHB 128
Saturday, November 19, 2011, 9:00 AM ~ 3:00 PM, HHB 128
Registrants are required to attend all two days.
Facilitators: Dr. Tim Hopper, Campus-wide Faculty Consultant for Educational Technology Initiatives (CFCETI), Learning and Teaching Centre, and
Associate Professor School of Exercise Science, Physical and Health Education, and Invited Guests
Working from instructors’ experiences using technology in their courses, this follow-up Course Design Institute (CDI) educational technology lens will explore an array of user-friendly open source and cloud based software tools that are freely available. These applications, building on principles of course design learned in the introductory CDI, can be used to further develop and refine aspects of instructors’ courses intended to connect the students to their learning. Featuring examples of successful integration of technology tools to enhance student learning, the workshop will examine case studies of instructors using technology in campus based, blended and distance education courses. A key goal of the workshop will be to set up a social network of instructors who can share and support each other’s ed. tech. innovations. To this end a “Tech. Tools” web 2.0 website has been set up by UVic Learning Systems and will be accessible to participants for cross-campus collaboration on ed. tech. initiatives in university courses. Please note: a willingness and openness for participants to use "tech tools" in their courses to enhance student learning is our only expectation. We certainly do not expect you to be an expert in any form of educational technology. All levels of users are welcome.

Please Note: This CDI lens is 2 days long, and your attendance on both days is expected. This CDI lens is available at no charge to all UVic instructors who are accepted into the program.
