Developing Your Teaching Dossier Workshop [Teaching Assessment Series]
Friday, October 4, 2013
9:30 AM ~ 11:30 AM, HHB 128
Facilitator: Dr. Marty Wall, Department of Educational Psychology & Leadership Studies, and the Learning and Teaching Centre
Developing your teaching dossier is the most effective way to document your teaching for reappointment, tenure and promotion, as well as for winning awards. The most important part of the dossier is the narrative statement that guides the reader through the supporting documentary evidence. This workshop will discuss the role of the teaching dossier in the assessment process at UVic, assist you in developing your narrative, and outline an effective structure for organizing your materials. The workshop is also useful for graduate students who plan to apply for teaching jobs!
Open to all those who are involved, or plan to be involved, in instruction.

Teaching with PowerPoint [Teaching Tips Series #3]
Thursday, October 10, 2013
9:30 AM ~ 11:30 AM, HHB 128
Facilitator: Marty Wall, Department of Educational Psychology & Leadership Studies, and the Learning and Teaching Centre
PowerPoint can be an effective teaching tool but is instead often a distracting impediment to learning. We will focus on the differences between presenting and teaching in PowerPoint, the PowerPoint teaching strategy of “less-is-more,” the do’s and don’ts of teaching with PowerPoint, and guidelines for animating PowerPoint slides to enhance teacher-student communication. Participants are encouraged to bring questions and examples.

Teaching Conceptual Foundations: Methods and Madness [Scholarship of Teaching and Learning (SoTL) Series]
Thursday, October 17, 2013
Pt. 1: 11:30 AM ~ 12:15 PM, HHB 128
Facilitator: Daniel Bub, Psychology
I will discuss a novel approach to teaching core concepts in psychology based on a multimedia textbook (entitled Conceptual Foundations of Psychology) that I produced myself. The book was designed to overcome a number of fundamental limitations in commercial textbooks which I will describe in some detail. The course was built around the textbook and so required a commitment on the part of students to prepare outside of lecture time, which was intended to refine and extend their understanding of the material. I will present detailed information on how students responded to this unusual format.

The Art and Craft of Teaching the Large Class [Teaching Tips Series #4]
Wednesday, October 23, 2013
9:30 AM ~ 11:30 AM, HHB 128
Facilitator: Dr. Marty Wall, Department of Educational Psychology & Leadership Studies, and the Learning and Teaching Centre
The large class is not merely a larger version of a small class; it presents its own unique challenges and opportunities. Teaching a large class effectively requires the application of a number of skills, but at some point such teaching truly becomes an art. What is the nature of this transition and how can it be achieved? The workshop will explore this issue from the perspective of my own experience in teaching classes with enrollments exceeding 2,000 students.
