Intensive Summer Teaching Institute (ISTI): Best Practices in University Teaching
Monday, August 13, 2012 ~ Friday, August 17, 2012 inclusive
9:30 AM ~ 4:00 PM, HHB 128
Facilitator: Dr. Marty Wall, Learning and Teaching Centre
In response to requests from colleagues at UVic, we have designed the UVic ISTI both for new instructors who have not had the opportunity for training in teaching in their previous institution and for experienced instructors already at UVic who might not previously have had the opportunity to learn about current best practices in teaching in their discipline. The goals and content of the Institute complement and dovetail with the orientation event entitled “Essentials for Career Success at UVic for New Faculty and Librarians” being held during the week following the ISTI: Wednesday, August 22, 2012 to Friday, August 24, 2012. Participants can therefore proceed directly from the Institute to the orientation event and hence be better prepared for the classroom.

In addition to microteaching opportunities and learning of the unique features of the UVic teaching environment, the sessions will deal with such topics as teaching and learning strategies, lecturing, syllabus construction, grading student performance, and developing one’s own teaching dossier. Our intent is to make a real difference in how you approach your teaching, to save you time in your teaching preparations, to improve your satisfaction with the learning outcomes of your students, and above all to put you in a position to assume your UVic teaching responsibilities this year with increased competence and confidence.

PLEASE NOTE: Priority will be given to instructors who have started teaching at UVic within the last three years. Those at UVic for a longer period of time may register and will be placed on a wait list until closer to the date. There is a $75.00 non-refundable fee.
Enrollment is limited to 20 participants. Please register early.

Essentials for Career Success
Wednesday, August 22; Thursday, August 23; and Friday, August 24, 2012
BY INVITATION ONLY
New Faculty and Librarians will be provided with the essentials needed to build a strong foundation for success in teaching, service and research (if appropriate) at UVic, as well as with an orientation to the broad range of services and programs that can help you achieve your goals. A clear focus for the orientation is the chance to start to build community that will support you and your family now and into the future. This orientation is for anyone who is new (or new-ish) to UVic. Please note: many colleagues are new to UVic but have worked at other institutions, so the orientation is designed with this in mind and caters just as well to mid-career professionals moving to Victoria.
The Agenda and Registration form will be available later in the summer.
