Teaching Squares
It seems a strange thing to feel, but teaching can be a lonely endeavour. Sure, you can build a cameraderie with your students centred around the content of your classes, but it may not be so easy to share ideas of teaching with them. Teaching Squares is a concept created by Anne Wessely of St. Louis Community College. A group of four people (it can also be three people in a triangle) who are teaching in different disciplines agree to sit in on each other's classes as a non-participating observer. Each Teaching Squares member visits one class per week and is visited once by another. After all visits have been completed, the group reconvene to discuss what they discovered about their own teaching.

The Art and Craft of Teaching the Large Class [Teaching Tips Series #9]
Wednesday, April 6, 2011
10:00 AM ~ 12:00 PM, HHB 128
Facilitator: Dr. Marty Wall, Department of Psychology and the Learning and Teaching Centre
The large class is not merely a larger version of a small class; it presents its own unique challenges and opportunities. Teaching a large class effectively requires the application of a number of skills, but at some point such teaching truly becomes an art. What is the nature of this transition and how can it be achieved? The workshop will explore this issue from the perspective of my own experience in teaching classes with enrollments exceeding 2,000 students.

Student Passivity [Critical Incidents Series]
Wednesday, April 6, 2011
6:00 PM ~  7:30 PM, HHB128
Facilitator: Lindsey Brill, Department of Greek and Roman Studies
A struggling professor is failing to elicit any response from students in a compulsory first-year English literature course that is intended to be driven by class discussion. This promotes the identification of the purpose of class discussion and optimal ways to achieve the maximum participation of students.

Developing Your Teaching Dossier Workshop [Teaching Assessment Series]
Thursday, April 7, 2011
10:00 AM ~ 12:00 PM, HHB 128
Facilitator: Dr. Marty Wall, Department of Psychology, and the Learning and Teaching Centre
Developing your teaching dossier is the most effective way to document your teaching for reappointment, tenure and promotion, as well as for winning awards. The most important part of the dossier is the narrative statement that guides the reader through the supporting documentary evidence. This workshop will discuss the role of the teaching dossier in the assessment process at UVic, assist you in developing your narrative, and outline an effective structure for organizing your material. The workshop is also useful for graduate students who plan to apply for teaching jobs!
Open to all those who are involved, or plan to be involved, in instruction.

The Wonders of Concept Mapping: A Useful Tool for Thesis Writing and Tutorials [TA ProD]
Tuesday, April 12, 2011
3:00 PM ~ 4:30 PM, CLEA108, MAC Lab
Facilitator: Gordon Ruby, Department of Political Science
In this workshop, we will first examine the basic principles of concept mapping and create one ourselves! The goal is to take information on any topic and show how that information can be presented and linked together in real time during your tutorials. The second exercise in the workshop will introduce a free, downloadable digital concept mapping program (compatible with both Mac and PC) to show how you can use concept mapping to store, access, organize, and present all the information about your thesis or major paper in ways you may have never thought possible! This workshop will be especially useful for students who are visual and tactile learners.

What the Heck is That Thing, and Why is it Here? [Instructional Technology (IT) Series] [TA ProD Series]
Thursday, April 21, 2011
10:00 AM ~ 11:30 AM, HHB 105
Facilitators: Cynthia Korpan, TA Training Program Coordinator, Learning and Teaching Centre; Mary Sanseverino, Acting Director, Learning and Teaching Centre
Consider this scenario: You have been assigned to teach in one of the lecture theatres on campus. The room has several video data projectors, lots of cables for plugging into various devices, and a thing that looks like a mini-video camera on a stick. You went to the introductory session on how to use the technology in the room and were told it is called a Visual Presenter or a Document Camera, and you were shown how to operate it. You remember thinking "Hey, I think I could use this tool in my classes," but in the hustle and bustle of actually teaching, the only thing you really remember is how to fold it down out of the way!

Does this scenario ring true for you? If yes, or if you've ever wondered, "What the heck is that thing?" then come along to this workshop. The Document Camera or Visual Presenter is actually a very functional piece of instructional technology, with many pedagogically-based uses. This workshop will introduce you to the camera from a pedagogical perspective. The session will run through a number of scenarios with the document camera playing a role in helping students meet various learning objectives. As well, we'll blend the document camera with other technologies (e.g. clickers, video, computer display, etc.). There will be an opportunity for hands-on practice, and we'll develop some instructional technology strategies based on your needs.

Instructors should soon be receiving the results of the Course Evaluation Survey (CES) for courses that they taught in the Fall Term. This session will examine aspects of the CES, and will also be an opportunity for you to have your questions on the CES answered. The topics will include how you might compare your individual reports with the average scores from your Faculty, how large classes fare in comparison to smaller classes, how first and second year courses compare with upper level courses, and how instructors might use a survey tool like TooFast to deliver in the term questions.
