Clear Communication: Speaking in the Academic Environment
Tuesdays and Thursdays, 10:00 AM ~ 11:30 AM, HHB 128
June 2, 2009 ~ July 2, 2009 (10 sessions in total)
Students are encouraged to attend every session if possible.
Instructor: Jodie Salter, The Writing Centre (firstname.lastname@example.org)
Clear Communication: Speaking in the Academic Environment provides graduate students who have English as an additional language with discipline-specific language support and teaching strategies. This course is designed to help participants gain confidence when engaging in academic conversations. Through practice, peer support, and directive feedback, participants improve their English-language communication skills, and this will enable them to use better instructional communication within their classrooms.
The Learning Environment:
Guided instruction and self-directed learning is tailored to meet individual learning needs. Moodle online support facilitates further self-directed learning. In this course, participants practice their pronunciation for clarity and emphasis of key points and gain awareness of linguistic differences in rhythm patterns and stresses. This non-evaluative peer-supportive learning environment allows participants to share research ideas and cultural experiences, thus developing both academic and social relations. From these classes, graduate students have developed an interdisciplinary social network, providing each other with emotional support to combat insecurities, frustrations, isolation, and cultural dislocation. Through cross-cultural dialogue, participants also broaden their understanding of diverse teaching, learning, and research practices.
Jodie Salter’s background is in instructional skills development and teaching in higher education. She has successfully run a number of LTC workshops that focus on communication skills for the classroom. Most recently she co-developed and ran the "Clear Communication" workshop series in the spring of 2009.
