First Year Course Instructors Council (FYCIC) ~ UVic’s Strategic Enrolment Plan, with Emphasis on Student Retention
Monday, June 23, 2008
2:00 PM ~ 3:30 PM, HHB 128
With Lynda Wallace-Hulecki and Joy Davis, Registrar and Enrolment Services
UVic’s strategic plan, A Vision for the Future (January 2007) states an ambitious aspiration: “To plan and build a nationally and internationally recognized student recruitment and retention program” in order to ensure that UVic attracts excellent students within an increasingly competitive higher education environment. An Enrolment Planning Committee (EPC) was established in the Spring of 2007 to lead a systematic enrolment planning process by which a Strategic Enrolment Plan is developed and annually renewed. The focus of the committee’s work is on facilitating an integrated approach to enrolment planning and on defining the means by which quality enrolment and a superior student life experience can best be achieved. Lynda Wallace-Hulecki, Registrar and Executive Director of Student Enrolment and chair of the EPC will present an overview of UVic’s strategic enrolment plan and priority initiatives, with particular emphasis on initiatives pertaining to student retention and success.

Curriculum: Diversity by Design
Wednesday, June 25, 2008 to Friday, June 27, 2008
8:30 AM ~ 4:30 PM, HHB 128
With Grace Wong Sneddon, Diversity Advisor, Department of the Vice-President Academic & Provost
A new offering at the Learning and Teaching Centre is entitled "Curriculum: Diversity by Design". This three-day interactive and experiential workshop builds on the model of the successful Course Redesign Workshop. This redesign workshop assists instructors in promoting an understanding of diversity and Indigenous teaching and learning as they relate to overall student success, and in the development of effective academic strategies.
This course will provide opportunities for dialogue related to ways in which diversity can affect the atmosphere of the classroom and teaching styles for reaching students with a variety of learning styles. This is an opportunity to expand your repertoire of instructional methods to increase student engagement, to design modes of assessment that are congruent with their intended outcomes, and to choose appropriate strategies to build a sense of community. There will be time to network with colleagues and learn about available services and resources. Spaces are limited. Early registration is recommended.
If you are interested in the Curriculum: Diversity by Design workshop, please contact 721-8571 or ltc@uvic.ca.
THIS WORKSHOP IS NOW FULL. Please contact us if you wish to be on the waitlist.
