Revising the Research Essay: A workshop for senior undergraduate and graduate students

Q: How do you know if your essay needs revision?
A: Your essay always needs revision.
"Revising the Research Essay” is a workshop designed to demonstrate some of the key steps to essay revision. We will discuss how to identify and solve problems with essay organization; how to make sure your argument is evident and consistent; and how to diagnose and revise issues of style. The session will consist of a short introductory lecture followed by examples and discussion. Since there is a limit of 30 participants for this session, please sign up soon. First Year Course Instructors Council (FYCIC) ~ Learning Skills
RESCHEDULED TO DECEMBER 5, 2007
Dr. Joe Parsons, Director of UVic Counselling Services, will describe briefly the changing mental health needs of UVic students, the services offered through Counselling Services, and how to make a referral. Joe will then highlight the Learning Skills Program's courses, workshops and one-to-one counselling offerings. Finally, Joe wants to discuss an innovative idea with the council involving "Professor Learning Tips."

b) Using Clickers in the classroom - Dr. Leslee Francis Pelton, Department of Curriculum and Instruction, Dr. Martin Smith, Department of Psychology and Dr. Penny Codding, Department of Chemistry;
c) Elluminate - live presentations at a distance by Trevar Pearce, Distance Education Services.

Technology in Presentations [TA ProD Series]

Your presentation skills are phenomenal, and you've got the right slides. But what if the data projector fails or it will not connect to your computer? What if your presentation looks good on your computer but not on the screen?
This workshop will cover issues about the technical side of presentations, whether in the class or when you give a talk at a conference. It will also include advanced features of Microsoft PowerPoint and will make your presentation stand out.

Developing Your Teaching Dossier Workshop

Developing your teaching dossier is the most effective way to document your teaching for reappointment, tenure and promotion, as well as for winning awards. The most important part of the dossier is the narrative statement that guides the reader through the supporting documentary evidence. This workshop will discuss the role of the teaching dossier in the assessment process at UVic, assist you in developing your narrative, and outline an effective structure for organizing your materials. Also useful for graduate students who plan to apply for teaching jobs! NOTE: Teresa will be away for a few months next year, so if you need this workshop please take it now!

Teaching Tips Series #3 ~ PowerPoint Revisited

A reprise of last year's LTC workshop on using PowerPoint as an effective teaching tool rather than as a distracting impediment to learning. For those who could not attend last year, we will discuss the differences between presenting and teaching, the strategy of "less-is-more," the do's and don'ts of teaching with PowerPoint, and guidelines for animating slides to enhance teacher-student communication. Dr. Wall encourages participants to bring questions and examples.

Proposing an Excellent Teacher for a UVic Alumni Teaching Award: Tips for Nominators

Co-sponsored by the UVic Alumni Association and the Learning and Teaching Centre.
Sometimes it can seem overwhelming to nominate a deserving instructor for a teaching award. However, it really is quite straightforward and well worth the effort when you see the positive impact such recognition can have. This information session and hands on workshop aims to simplify the process and offer tips for a successful nomination, including ideas for drafting a nomination statement and useful sources of documentation in support of your argument. All students and colleagues interested in nominating a deserving teacher for either the Harry Hickman Teaching Award (for Faculty) or the Gilian Sherwin Teaching Award (for Sessional Instructors, Lab Instructors, Senior Lab Instructors and Limited Term Faculty) are welcome. This workshop will also assist those nominating a colleague for any teaching award on or off campus. The Chair's Role in Facilitating Effective Program Redesign

With increased emphasis on enhancing our graduate and undergraduate programs, and motivated by a wide range of factors such as competition for the best students and external departmental reviews, chairs, directors and associate deans are increasingly finding themselves in a position of needing to lead their colleagues through a process of redesigning academic programs. Students generally want programs that are coherent, cohesive and easily navigated; faculty generally want to teach interesting courses in a rewarding way, be valued as teachers and to feel that their workload relative to that of their colleagues is fair. This session will aim to provide you with some tools that will help facilitate a program redesign process within your department or faculty. What are the questions to ask, where does one start, what might some of the common pitfalls be that can be avoided? Both presenters have experience in helping colleagues navigate this sometimes challenging and often controversial process.
Who should attend: This workshop is designed for chairs, directors and associate deans. You are invited to bring members of your curriculum committee and other faculty members who may be interested in taking on administrative roles in the future.
